This house is currently under construction in Tamahere. A gully and a natural overland stream passes through the site, adjacent to a significant ecological zone. This presented the house with the opportunity to engage with the landscape through its placement and orientation. Upon arrival, landscape feature planes conceal the house and inform the entry point.
This forms clear public and private zones of the residence. An intersecting volume rises towards the north, forming a step in the roof to provide high level light and ventilation to internal spaces. This volume anchors the circulation within, seamlessly transitioning between the guest wing, open living and dining, and the master bedroom suite that connects to the pool. Several ancillary spaces such as the theatre room, gym and scullery peel off this link
Two key materials are used externally in a high performing Sto plaster and a Euro style standing seam cladding. A hidden gutter around the perimeter is deployed so that all spouting is concealed for a clean and monolithic appearance. High performing glazing suites such as Vitrocsa are utilised for ease of use at large scales and to seamlessly tie into the contemporary aesthetic. Internally a mix of polished concrete, plaster board and rendered finishes are a visual translation of the external earth tones. Subtle variances in other finishes in the house such as tiles, benchtops, islands and vanities further enhance the design intent.
